thelaughingmuse: A picture of a "Decaffeinated" logo from a product. The subtitle text reads "...I drank what?" A quote from Real Genius, purported to be what Socrates said after he drank the poison that killed him. (Decaf coffee is the devil's blend.)
I had to stop and think about that. I pronounce "lawyer" so that it sounds like "loy-er", accent on the first syllable. Always have. And I first heard the word "foyer" spoken by my mom, who had probably either heard it from the realtor or only ever read the word, and I pronounce that word "foy-er", accent on the first syllable. So, yeah, seeing them put together so that they'd sound alike when spoken seemed perfectly normal to me.

...and yes, I didn't think that I ever had an especially audible regional accent, at least not compared to people from Boston, New York City, New Jersey, the American South, or my midwestern relatives. Yet I've been told that I have a very faint hint of a drawl. (Except when I'm decaffeinated. Then it's generally just gestures, some of them rude.)

thelaughingmuse: Bright green text on a black background. The text is in the style of a code snippet: subroutine yellow, comment 'we all live',end subroutine. Nobody gets this joke any more because modern object-oriented programming doesn't use this syntax. (Default)
